CALIFORNIA BUSINESS MINUTE Aging Workforce 10-17-07
Hi, I am Tim Johnson and welcome to the California Business Minute.
Californians in their Golden Years are spending more time working in the Golden State. A recent US Census report illustrates that both nationally and statewide people are working beyond retirement ages for two reasons. First, they are healthier and want to work. Second, they need the money to make ends meet.
The percentage nationally of people working beyond 65 is 23 percent compared to Californias 23.3 percent. But in either case 1 out of every 4 individuals from 65-74 are working which is up by 1 out of 5 a decade earlier.
San Francisco had the highest percentage of people working between the ages of 65-74 in the labor force. Los Angeles had 24.4 percent; San Diego at 24.3 percent; Sacramento 22.4 percent and Fresno at 20.6 percent.
With the aging population there is a need for older workers. Given this demand, instead of utilizing the word Seniors to describe this age group, maybe it should be entitled More Experienced Personnel.
I am Tim Johnson and this has been the California Business Minute.
