CALIFORNIA BUSINESS MINUTE Slackonomics 10-03-08
Hi, I am Tim Johnson and welcome to the California Business Minute.
No, it is not a follow up book by the authors of Freakonomics but instead a play on words by an author that is compelled to inform society that Generation X has turned 40. This generation has been referred to as lazy slackers, born in the mid 60s through 70s weaned on MTV and sugar glazed cereals has come of age.
The author of Slackonomics, Lisa Chamberlain imparts not only an ode to the generation that has been the blunt of sarcasm but also challenges this generation to embark on returning democracy into the center of ones life.
Chamberlain expresses the term diminished expectation. She identifies that this generation was the first generation to graduate college with huge credit card debt and loans. But she describes that this has kept this generation honest. Economic instability (excluding current conditions) has eradicating ideas of extreme wealth. In addition this generation has learned to live with less, to find happiness balancing life, and retained a sense of humor.
Generation-X is estimated to include 46 million Americans, or 17% of the U.S. population, spending $125 billion annually. California has nearly 11 million Gen- Xers comprising nearly 25 percent of this segment of the population.
I am Tim Johnson and this has been the California Business Minute.
