CALIFORNIA BUSINESS MINUTE Employment 08-24-09
Hi, I am Tim Johnson and welcome to the California Business Minute.
California’s unemployment rate increased to 11.9 for July, up from 11.6 percent for June according to the latest figures released by the Employment Development Department. The number of people unemployed in the state is estimated to be 2,187,000, up by 33,000 for the month and up by nearly 1 million since last year.
While California has a high unemployment rate, it’s ranking is now ranks 4th in the nation for unemployment tied with Oregon behind #1 Michigan (15.0%); #2 Rhode Island (12.7%); #3 Nevada (12.5%); #Tied 4 Oregon (11.9%); #6 South Carolina (11.8%); #7 Ohio (11.2%); #8 North Carolina (11.0%); Tied for 8th Kentucky at (11.0) #10 Tennessee at (10.7%) and Florida tied at (10.7%). Sixteen states have double digit unemployment.
For California, two sectors added jobs over the month, professional and business services and leisure and hospitality.
This month, only 49 counties out of the 58 had double digit unemployment up down from last month’s 50. However, only 4 counties, Marin, Napa, San Mateo, and Santa Barbara had lower unemployment rates than the national average of 9.4 percent
Marin County which has the lowest unemployment rate, increased from 7.5 in May to 8 percent in June jumped again to 8.2 percent for July. Imperial County continues to have the highest unemployment rate increasing to 30.2 percent from 27.5 percent and Yuba County replaced Alpine County with the second highest unemployment rate 18.4 percent.
