CALIFORNIA BUSINESS MINUTE Employment 06-19-09
Hi, I am Tim Johnson and welcome to the California Business Minute.
California’s unemployment rate increased from 11 percent to 11.5 percent for May according to the latest figures released by the Employment Development Department.
Out of the employment sectors only one sector, educational and health care services added jobs over the month. Additionally, government jobs in federal state and local government saw the largest aggregate loss of jobs – 14,000.
In addition, 49 counties out of the 58 had double digit unemployment up from last month’s 46. And only 7 counties, Marin, Napa, Orange, San Francisco, San Luis Obispo, San Mateo, and Santa Barbara had lower unemployment rates than the national average of 9.4 percent
Marin County has the lowest unemployment rate, remaining steady at 7.5 percent and Imperial County replaced Colusa having the highest rate at 26.8 percent and Sutter County rose to 18.2 percent with the second highest rate unemployment rate in the state.
I am Tim Johnson and this has been the California Business Minute.
