CALIFORNIA BUSINESS MINUTE Employment 05-26-09
Hi, I am Tim Johnson and welcome to the California Business Minute.
California’s unemployment rate decreased from 11.2 percent to 11 percent for April according to the latest figures released by the Employment Development Department.
The number of Californians unemployed in April was estimated to be 2,057,000, down from the 2,080,000 reported in the March estimate. However, the numbers illustrate that there are 35,000 less Californians unemployed in April which should make the total number of Californians unemployed at 2,045,000, which means there was a revise made during the month.
Out of the employment sectors, three segments- natural resources,& mining, other services and government added jobs added jobs. Of interest, note that educational and health care services did not add jobs. The first time in years this occurred. People have lost their health benefits due to job losses and it has had an impact on elective medical procedures causing a downturn in the hiring demand.
In addition, 46 counties out of the 58 had double digit unemployment. Many counties with agricultural based economies have witnessed lower unemployment due to the seasonality of the job market. On the flip side, 8 counties, Marin, Mono, Napa, Orange, San Francisco, San Luis Obispo, San Mateo, and Santa Barbara had lower unemployment rates than the national average of 8.9 percent
Marin County has the lowest unemployment rate, remaining steady at 7.4 percent and Imperial County replaced Colusa having the highest rate at 26.9 percent.
