CALIFORNIA BUSINESS MINUTE Port of Stockton 05-14-09
Hi, I am Tim Johnson and welcome to the California Business Minute.
Officials at the Port of Stockton identified that they have received approval from U.S. Dept. of Commerce, Foreign Trade Zones Board for expansion of Foreign Trade Zone # 231, which is managed by the inland seaport.
The expansion will take place at the nearly 475-acre Opus Logistics Center located in East Stockton will be the eighth site approved for Stockton. This approval coincides with the completion of the largest warehouse built on speculation in Northern California -- 736,000 square feet.
“This expansion is part of the port's commitment to supporting economic development in the San Joaquin Valley,” says Henry McKay, Port of Stockton special projects manager. “Its strategic location next to the Burlington Northern and Sante Fe railroads intermodal road promises to play an important role in promoting global trade and in turn creating family wage jobs.”
The Foreign Trade Zone program was created by Congress in 1934 as part of a stimulus package to assist the country during the Great Depression.
The Port of Stockton a deep-water port specializing in servicing break bulk, dry and liquid bulks and other non-containerized cargos, 75 nautical miles east of San Francisco Bay as a niche port.
