Hi, I am Tim Johnson and welcome to the California Business Minute.
California’s unemployment rate increased from 10.6 to 11.2 percent in March according to data released by the California Employment Development.
Some reports illustrate this is the highest unemployment has been recorded at the state level since modern day recording.
The number of people unemployed in California last month is estimated at 2,080,000 – up by 119,000 from February, and up by 913,000 compared with March of last year.
Out of all of the employment sectors, two ‘Information’ and educational and health services added jobs over the month.
Of key significance, 47 counties out of the 58 had double digit unemployment rates up from 42 counties from February. However, this month, Marin, Mono, Orange, San Mateo, Santa Barbara had lower or equal to the national unemployment rate of 8.5 percent. Marin had the lowest unemployment rates at 7.4 percent followed by Mono County at 7.9 percent. Colusa County had the highest unemployment rate a 25.6 percent and Imperial County was right behind at 25.1.
