CALIFORNIA BUSINESS MINUTE Female Entrepreneurs 11-18-11
Hi, I am Tim Johnson and welcome to the California Business Minute.
Women make up 50% of the U.S. adult population and account for 46% of the workforce, when it comes to entrepreneurism, they’re behind the curve.
Findings from a new study by the Kauffman Foundation on the Entrepreneurship Gender Gap reveal women only account for roughly one third of all new business launches. Additionally, women entrepreneurs are also falling behind men when it comes to revenue generation. Less than two percent of female-led small businesses have revenue exceeding $1 million. In contrast, more than six percent of male-led firms reported revenue of over $1 million.
However, to show where women are being successful, ForbesWoman has released its first list of the top 20 cities for women in business. Where are women best-poised for success and why?
The methodology identified cities with high projected job growth, education levels and quality of life, and low cost of business. Then to tighten the scope for female entrepreneurs, we added new metrics: What cities have seen the biggest growth in the number of female-led firms in recent years? Where are the most SBA-backed loans going to women, and where are women turning those loans into million-dollar profits?
For California, only one city made the list. The following identifies the Top Ten Best Cities for Women Entrepreneurs.
TOP TEN BEST CITIES FOR WOMEN ENTREPRENEURS 1. New York 2. San Francisco 3. Chicago 4. Atlanta 5. Dallas 6. Tampa 7. Richmond 8. Charlotte 9. Bethesda 10. Washington DC
