CALIFORNIA BUSINESS MINUTE Small Business Survival Index 12-22-10
Hi, I am Tim Johnson and welcome to the California Business Minute.
The Small Business & Entrepreneurship Council (SBE Council) released its 15th annual rankings of the states according to their public policy climates for small business and entrepreneurship in the "Small Business Survival Index 2010: Ranking the Policy Environment for Entrepreneurship Across the Nation."
The rankings measure the costs and burdens of government on small business, and policy areas that enable their competitiveness and growth. The Index measures which states are truly friendly to small business, and which are not in terms of public policy decisions. The factors included in the Index - taxes, various regulatory costs, government spending, property rights, health care policies, energy costs, and much more - matter a great deal to the competitiveness of each state and to the well being of small business. The 2010 Index has been expanded to cover 38 major government- imposed or government-related costs affecting small businesses and entrepreneurs. The measures are added together for an overall rating.
Unfortunately for California this Index has never painted a flattering picture.
The Top 10 States 1) South Dakota 2) Nevada 3) Texas 4) Wyoming 5) Washington 6) Florida 7) Alabama 8) South Carolina 9) Ohio 10) Colorado
The Bottom 10 States 42) Minnesota 43) Massachusetts 44) Hawaii 45) Rhode Island 46) Maine 47) Vermont 48) California 49) New York 50) New Jersey 51) District of Columbia
I am Tim Johnson and this has been the California Business Minute.
