CALIFORNIA BUSINESS MINUTE Magnets 12-01-10
Hi, I am Tim Johnson and welcome to the California Business Minute.
California, Florida and Texas are tied for top honors as America’s strongest population magnets. Each is the top destination for movers from six other states, according to a new report from the U.S. Census Bureau.
Minnesota, Virginia and Washington states are the runners-up. Each is the prime destination for people leaving three other states.
The Census Bureau released 2007-08 migration data, which was collected by its annual American Community Survey. It identifies the states that attract the greatest number of movers from other states.
California is the prime target for people who are moving out of Arizona then followed by Colorado, Hawaii, Nevada, Texas and Washington.
The states listed in bold are followed by the other states for which they are the prime destinations:
Florida (6): Alaska, Georgia, Massachusetts, Michigan, New York and Ohio. Texas (6): Arkansas, California, Louisiana, New Mexico, Oklahoma and Tennessee. New York (5): Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Jersey, Rhode Island and Vermont. Minnesota (3): North Dakota, South Dakota and Wisconsin. Virginia (3): Maryland, North Carolina and West Virginia. Washington (3): Idaho, Montana and Oregon.
The Census Bureau’s migration statistics cover the one-year period from 2007 to 2008, which coincided with the beginning of the economic downturn. The subsequent recession may have affected moving patterns, especially in California and Florida, which were especially hard-hit, but the numbers remain the latest official figures on interstate moving.
I am Tim Johnson and this has been the California Business Minute.
