CALIFORNIA BUSINESS MINUTE Happiest States 12-28-09
Hi, I am Tim Johnson and welcome to the California Business Minute.
It appears that Californians are not very happy. In research completed by the University of Warwick in Coventry, England that is published in the magazine – Science illustrated that the happiest people in the United States are either in the south or ‘sun belt’ states.
The report examined several factors including sunshine, traffic congestion and housing affordability by state and the District of Columbia. Additionally, rather than relying on quality of life studies or solely on surveys, the researchers combined the two to compare the states.
The top ten are as follows:
1. Louisiana 2. Hawaii 3. Florida 4. Tennessee 5. Arizona 6. Mississippi 7. Montana 8. South Carolina 9. Alabama 10. Maine
The bottom ten are as follows:
41. Pennsylvania 42. Rhode Island 43. Massachussetts 44. Ohio 45. Illinois 46. California 47. Indiana 48. Michigan 49. New Jersey 50. Connecticut 51. New York
Researchers were asked why they thought California was not ranked higher specifically since it is known for its sunshine and beaches. The researchers remarked that many people feel that way , but so do so many others thus the cost of living, congestion and housing affordability make it a non-fulfilling prophecy.
I am Tim Johnson and this has been the California Business Minute.
