CALIFORNIA BUSINESS MINUTE Ranking California 12-08-09
Hi, I am Tim Johnson and welcome to the California Business Minute.
The Small Business & Entrepreneurship Council (SBE Council) released its 14th annual rankings of the states according to their public policy climates for small business and entrepreneurship in the “Small Business Survival Index 2009: Ranking the Policy Environment for Entrepreneurship Across the Nation.”
SBE Council chief economist Raymond J. Keating, author of the study, said: “It’s hard to find any good news at the national level for entrepreneurs, small business and their employees. The U.S. economy slipped into a recession in December 2007, with matters getting far worse late last year. Congress and the White House have not offered positive solutions to help the job-creating sector. In fact, most of their actions will hurt, not help, small businesses.
The 2009 Index has been expanded to cover 36 major government-imposed or government-related costs affecting small businesses and entrepreneurs. The measures are added together for an overall rating.
California ranks 49th in between #48 New York and #50 New Jersey.
South Dakota and Nevada are ranked #1 and #2. This east coast think tank needs to get out and see the countryside if they think that these two states are hot bed for entrepreneurial activity. Apparently, the Council doesn’t recognize that Nevada’s biggest entrepreneurial activity is to come to California to get entrepreneurs.
