CA Avocados

Hi, I am Tim Johnson and welcome to the California Business Minute.
This year’s avocado crop is forecasted to rebound from last year’s smallest
crop in nearly 20 years at 174,000 pounds value at just $200 million due in
part to a warm season and wild fires in southern California.
However, this year, the estimate is looking at nearly 470,000 pounds and
could be valued at $500 million in value but that is only a trend analysis,
not a market based forecast.
The California Farm Bureau reports that the 2010 crop looks good given near
perfect weather conditions at bloom time have avocado grower say the California
crop could be a huge one. But growers know that while the potential is there
for a good crop, weather between know and harvest could reduce that potential.
Growers are hoping for ample rain, no winds and frost.
The state’s top avocado producing counties are San Diego, Ventura and Riverside.
