CALIFORNIA BUSINESS MINUTE Employment 10-19-09
Hi, I am Tim Johnson and welcome to the California Business Minute.
California’s unemployment rate held steady for September, depending upon the way you read the number at 12.2 percent according to the latest figures released by the Employment Development Department. The number of people unemployed in the state is estimated to be 2,248,000 for the month.
For California, many people just ran out of unemployment or simply stopped looking for work, hence the reason why the unemployment numbers didn't rise. They are not counted among the unemployed.
Meanwhile, this month, 48 counties out of the 58 had double digit unemployment, down from last month’s 49. However, this month 9 counties, Inyo, Marin, Mariposa, Napa, Orange, San Francisco, San Mateo, San Luis Obispo and Santa Barbara had lower unemployment rates than the national average of 9.8 percent
Marin County has the lowest unemployment rate, 8.0 percent for September, falling 0.3 percent from August. Imperial County continues to have the highest unemployment rate at 30.1 percent.
Overall the news was not very comforting to Californians.
I am Tim Johnson and this has been the California Business Minute.
