CALIFORNIA BUSINESS MINUTE Health Disparities 10-02-09
Hi, I am Tim Johnson and welcome to the California Business Minute.
The University of California, Merced announced it has secured funding to create a center that would research health disparities in ethnic underserved populations and train students interested in health-related careers.
A grant from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services will help create the ‘Center of Excellence for the Study of Health Disparities in Rural and Ethnic Underserved populations.’
“UC Merced is the ideal location for research and education on health disparities,” says Chancellor Steve Kang. “Our region offers a natural laboratory for education, training and research in this area.”
The goal is to increase the number of students knowledgeable about disparities in health care and health outcomes, improve the number of students from under-represented and disadvantaged groups performing research in this area, and expand the capacity of the university to conduct health sciences research that addresses disparities in the region.
“Merced and the surrounding San Joaquin Valley are grossly underserved when it comes to health services,” says U.S. Rep. Dennis Cardoza, D-Merced. “What sets this center apart from any other is that researchers will also hone in on the socioeconomic and cultural factors that influence health disparities in the Valley.”
I am Tim Johnson and this has been the California Business Minute.
