Hi, I am Tim Johnson and welcome to the California Business Minute.

As the 2010 walnut harvest begins, forecasts call for a bumper crop according
to the US Dept. of Agriculture.

This year’s production yield is predicted to be 510,000 short tons, 17 percent
larger than 2009’s crop of 437,000 and more than double the crop production in 2000.

"Today's consumers prefer walnuts because they know it is a high-quality food that
tastes great and is packed with nutrition.  That makes walnuts a good value, and a
solid investment in health," explained Dennis A. Balint, Executive Director of the
California Walnut Board. 

California walnuts account for 99% of the commercial U.S. supply and three-fourths
of world trade.
