CALIFORNIA BUSINESS MINUTE Employment 09-17-10
Hi, I am Tim Johnson and welcome to the California Business Minute.
The state’s unemployment rate increased from 12.3 percent in July to 12.4 percent according to the Employment Development Department, EDD. Unemployment was 0.4 percent higher in August from August 2009 illustrating that employment still lags.
Only two categories (mining and logging; and professional and business services) added jobs over the month. Nine categories: (construction; manufacturing; trade, transportation and utilities; information; financial activities; educational and health services; leisure and hospitality; other services; and government) reported job declines this month.
The numbers are goofy. Month- over- month, there are less people in the labor force but there are more people employed. Most counties saw a percentage reduction in their unemployment yet the percent of people unemployed increased.
Marin County had the lowest unemployment rate at 8.4 percent and Imperial had the highest at 30.4 percent.
I am Tim Johnson and this has been the California Business Minute.
