CALIFORNIA BUSINESS MINUTE Military’s Economic Impact on San Diego 09-15-10
Hi, I am Tim Johnson and welcome to the California Business Minute.
A new analysis of the economic impact of the military in San Diego shows defense spending generates an estimated 340,000 jobs in the region. The latest figures available -- from 2008 -- show the Defense Department spent $16 billion in San Diego, and generated 23 percent of all the jobs in the region.
Rear Admiral William French, commander of the Navy region southwest, says military spending in San Diego is only going to grow.“In 2008 we had a total of 56 ships here,” French said. “In 2014 we’re going to have 86 ships home-ported in San Diego. So you have the ships, the infrastructure to support those ships, the sailors and all their families that live in San Diego.”
Defense spending includes salaries for 140,000 active duty military, benefits for 244,000 veterans, the construction of new barracks and defense contracts.
The research, which was paid for by the San Diego Military Advisory Council, SDMAC, a non-profit that advocates for military interests in San Diego. It was completed by UC San Diego.
I am Tim Johnson and this has been the California Business Minute.
