CALIFORNIA BUSINESS MINUTE Beach Quality 07-30-10
Hi, I am Tim Johnson and welcome to the California Business Minute.
Looking for a great beach to enjoy in California this summer? In 2009 there were 2,904 "beach days" where California's beaches were either closed or under advisory due to water pollution, according to the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) which has just released their 20th Annual Beachwater Quality Report.
Two California Beaches were named in the Top Ten: Avalon Beach north of the GP Pier in Los Angeles and Poche Beach in Orange County.
However, unlike the Heal the Bay’s Annual Report Card, (see 06-04-10 Minute) several beaches ranked higher than the two listed on the Beachwater Quality Report. And in fact many that were listed on the Heal the Bay’s report were not listed on the NRDC annual Beachwater Quality Report.
The following illustrates the rankings of the Top Ten Beaches with the Worst Water Quality.
TOP TEN WORST BEACHES FOR WATER QUALITY
1. Jeorse Park Beach, Indiana 2. Avalon Beach, North of GP Pier, Los Angeles 3. St. Clair Shores, Blossom Heath Beach, Michigan 4. Kings at Stacy Brook, Massachusetts 5. Cockle Cove Creek, Massachusetts 6. St. Clair Shores Memorial Park Beach, Michigan 7. Jackson Park Beach, Illinois 8. Singing Bridge Beach, Michigan 9. Jeorse Park Beach II, Indiana 10. Poche Beach, Orange County
Six out of the top ten beaches ranked are located on Lake Michigan. However, for California, there are many beaches that are ranked 5 star regarding water quality and frequency of testing to their quality.
I am Tim Johnson and this has been the California Business Minute.
