CALIFORNIA BUSINESS MINUTE Women & Cities 07-27-10
Hi, I am Tim Johnson and welcome to the California Business Minute.
Two major rankings on the Best Cities for Women in the categories for single women and working mothers have been released.
The blog, www.singlemindedwomen.com ranked the Top Ten Cities for Single Women. Their methodology factored in items such as cost of living, unemployment rate, median age and cost of housing to mention a few.
The following lists the top ten. Unfortunately, no city from California made this list. However, two cities from both Pennsylvania and Texas are on the list. But, only three ‘sun belt’ cities made the list. Get out those snow shovels ladies!
Top Ten Cities for Single Women 1. Boston, MA 2. Washington D.C. 3. New York, NY 4. Seattle, WA 5. Philadelphia, PA 6. Phoenix, AZ 7. Denver, CO 8. Pittsburg, PA 9. Dallas, TX 10. Austin, TX
Another ranking by www.Forbes.com released its second annual list of the Best Cities for Working Mothers. Their methodology involves the 50 largest metropolitan statistical areas in the nation. Forbes.com explains that the ‘best’ means different things to different people and in this case to women. Therefore they used categories where best could be easily quantified such as crime rates, quality of schools, healthcare, salaries/ earnings and unemployment rates. Two cities from the Empire State made the Top Ten list- New York and Buffalo.
Top Ten Cities for Working Mothers 1. Minneapolis – St. Paul, MN 2. Washington D.C. 3. Boston, MA 4. Pittsburg, PA 5. Baltimore, MD 6. Denver, CO 7. Hartford, CN 8. New York, NY 9. Seattle-Tacoma, WA 10. Buffalo-Niagara Falls, NY
Meanwhile, the highest ranking city from California was San Diego at 13, followed by San Jose-Sunnyvale at 16, San Francisco at 23, Los Angeles at 28, Riverside-San Bernardino at 32 and Sacramento at 35.
No cities from Texas, Illinois or Florida were in the Top 20 and Las Vegas was ranked 50th.
Meanwhile, six cities, Washington D.C. Boston, Pittsburg, Seattle, New York and Denver appeared in both rankings. Again, cold weather communities.
I am Tim Johnson and this has been the California Business Minute.
