CALIFORNIA BUSINESS MINUTE International Trade 06-10-11
Hi, I am Tim Johnson and welcome to the California Business Minute.
The Nation's international trade deficit in goods and services decreased to $43.7 billion in April down from $46.8 billion (revised) in March, as exports increased and imports decreased.
Exports increased to $175.6 billion in April from $173.4 billion in March. Goods were $126.4 billion in April, up from $124.5 billion in March, and services were $49.1 billion in April, up from $48.9 billion in March. Imports decreased to $219.2 billion in April from $220.2 billion in March. Goods were $184.5 billion in April, down from $185.6 billion in March, and services were $34.7 billion in April, virtually unchanged from March. For goods, the deficit was $58.1 billion in April, down from $61.1 billion in March. For services, the surplus was $14.4 billion in April, up from $14.3 billion in March.
In California, the balance of trade dropped slightly. Export activity fell from $13.9 billion in March to $12.9 billion. Manufactured product and re-export activity fell for the month. California remains the second largest exporting state in the nation behind Texas for the month and through the first quarter of the year. California’s imports fell by $1.9 billion to $26.9 billion for April and a total for the first quarter of $79 billion. California is the largest state for imports in the nation comprising 15.4 percent for the month; Texas is second at 14.3 percent.
