CALIFORNIA BUSINESS MINUTE Manliest Cities 06-24-10
Hi, I am Tim Johnson and welcome to the California Business Minute.
Mars Chocolate North America announced this week the release of the second annual COMBOS® “America’s Manliest Cities” study.
The study ranks 50 major metropolitan areas, using manly criteria like the number of home improvement stores, steak houses, pickup trucks and motorcycles per capita. In the change in rankings can also be attributed to a new category this year – manly occupations (fire fighters, police officers, construction workers and EMT personnel). The manly occupations category was added this year to recognize the hard-working guys that make so many American cities great places to live.
Let’s stop to analyze. Construction workers, California has lost nearly 100,000 such jobs in this industry since the middle of 2007, so it is no wonder why California cities are not ranked in the Top 10.
Top Ten Manliest Cities in the Nation 1. Charlotte, NC 2. Columbus, OH 3. Kansas City, MO 4. Nashville, TN 5. Baltimore, MD 6. Milwaukie, WI 7. Chicago, IL 8. Indianapolis, IN 9. Washington DC 10. Philadelphia PA
San Diego is ranked 42nd; San Francisco 43rd; Sacramento 45th; Oakland 47th and Los Angeles 48th Unfortunately for Portland, Oregon - it is named the least manliest city. However, this ranking quickly unravels upon review. The cities that have been impacted the hardest from the downturn in the housing collapse are those that are on the lower end of the list. Look to the rankings of cities in Arizona, California, Florida, Nevada and Michigan as examples.
I am Tim Johnson and this has been the California Business Minute.
