CALIFORNIA BUSINESS MINUTE Listening for ET 06-07-10
Hi, I am Tim Johnson and welcome to the California Business Minute.
If and when extraterrestrials try to make contact with us, it most likely it will be at the Allen Telescopic Array at the Hat Creek Observatory in Northeastern California.
Saturday June 12, the Observatory is holding an open house to present their work on new and exciting radio astronomy and on the search for extraterrestrial intelligence, http://www.hcro.org/starparties/2010/ATAOpenHouse.pdf
In 1959, the University of California began a site location study for an observatory. The Hat Creek site was selected due to the low impacts of radio frequencies in the area. Construction on the observatory began shortly thereafter with research operations searching the cosmos by 1963 with the advent of a 80 foot satellite. Decades later, the Mt. View- based organization Searching for Extraterrestrial Intelligence, SETI located the Allen Telescopic Array, named after the co-founder of Microsoft, Paul Allen who in part donated the money to build this project, about 10 years ago, see the following video on the purpose and development: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5qmmZKMN7WA&feature=related.
The Observatory is located some distance east of Redding and north of Mt. Lassen. But it may be an interesting family or individual outing. The event is free. Remember, these folks listen to the cosmos for ET. So if you want to look at stars, make sure to bring binoculars or your own telescope.
I am Tim Johnson and this has been the California Business Minute.
