CALIFORNIA BUSINESS MINUTE Most Miserable Cities 02-06-12
Hi, I am Tim Johnson and welcome to the California Business Minute.
Things are looking up for California as only 6 cities compared to 8 from last year were ranked in the Top 20 Most Miserable Cities in the Nation.
The annual ranking by Forbes.com examined ten factors for the 200 largest metro areas and divisions in the nation to determine its “Most Miserable Cities” list. They include violent crimes, unemployment, foreclosures, taxes, home prices and political corruption. It also includes weather and weighs how their professional sports teams fared.
Six California cities made the list. Sacramento was ranked high again due to its poor performing sports team and the inability of the city to build a new arena and high foreclosure rate. Stockton, fell from the top spot to 11 but still has high crime and unemployment rates. Bakersfield rose in the ranking to 17 due to air pollution and low college graduate levels. Vallejo also dropped but remained on the list due to crime and poor city service levels. Modesto fell from 4 to 19 but remained on the Top 20 due to foreclosure and unemployment rates. Merced fell from 3 to 15 but remained on the list due to unemployment and high foreclosure rates. Fresno and Salinas fell off the list.
