Hi, I am Tim Johnson and welcome to the California Business Minute.
Foreign tourism turns out to have been one of the bright spots for the US and California economies.
According to the U.S. Travel Association, foreign visitors in 2010 generated $241 billion in economic output and supported $1.8 million jobs in the nation. However, more recent information identifies that foreign visitors increased by 13.5 percent in 2011 to the U.S.
Tourism in California will have spent $104 billion, the first time ever that it has exceeded the $100 billion mark, up from $95.1 billion that tourists spent in 2010.
That was a 4 percent overall growth and 7 percent growth in international visitors over the year.
California officials are expecting tourism dollars to reach $110 billion in 2012 and $115 billion in 2013.
Meanwhile, San Diego (one of the top tourism destinations in the world and the 31 travel destination in California has been trying to get through the doldrums of the Great Recession, British Airways returned its daily trips to and from London with over 400,000 flying from Europe to San Diego annually.
Meanwhile the website Lovely Planter identified California’s gold Country as one of the Top Ten Must See Destinations in the U.S. in 2012. It was ranked number 6th.
