California’s exports increased in January for the third consecutive month, according to an analysis by the University of California Center, Sacramento of data from the U.S. Commerce Department.
In January, the value of California’s export trade rose 18.5 percent to $10.3 billion, compared to the $8.7 billion in January 2009.
The Golden State accounted for 11.1 percent of the nation’s merchandise exports in January. California’s exports of manufactured goods grew by 10.2 percent from last January. Shipments of agricultural goods and other non-manufactured products, meanwhile, jumped by 46.7 percent. And re-exports of goods previously imported into the state rose by 35.8 percent.
Results at California’s major international trade gateways demonstrated the improved exports environment. The number of loaded shipping containers leaving the Ports of Los Angeles, Long Beach and Oakland were up by 26.8 percent over from last year. Likewise, at San Francisco International and Los Angeles International, which are California’s two primary international airports, export tonnage in January increased by 32.5 percent over January 2009.
As for imports, California’s import trade increased 14.6 percent to $23 billion over January 2009, according to the U.S. Commerce Department data.
