CALIFORNIA BUSINESS MINUTE Arcata 03-11-10
Hi, I am Tim Johnson and welcome to the California Business Minute
After nearly nine months of work in the attempt to continue to build a diverse and sustainable community, the city of Arcata has completed the update on its Economic Strategic Development Plan. The plan updated every five years, provides the city with new insight and directions. This plan identifies and focuses on several new industry clusters they will encourage to grow in the community.
Several industries were identified in the economic plan such as diversified health care; specialty agriculture; food and beverage; management and innovation services and niche manufacturing.
For example, one of the clusters is health care. The strategies in the plan recommend expanding services to include senior residential care, child care, outpatient care, preventative care, and holistic, nontraditional medicine.
Yet another focus of the plan is to encourage specialty agriculture. The plan recommends providing space for growing and startup firms in the industry, such as at Foodworks Culinary Center.
Another cluster is the development of management and innovation services, such as business consulting businesses. The city hopes to help retain Humboldt State University students and alumni and also attract people with a strong commitment to renewable energy and efficiency according to the plan.
This is the second five-year for the city. The plan guides the city in the direction it takes to improve its economy.
I am Tim Johnson and this has been the California Business Minute.
